Suzie Mahe expressed her delight after winning the Jersey Make a Difference Award from BBC Radio.
The BBC Radio Jersey Make a Difference Award was given to a survivor of domestic abuse for her efforts to amend the island’s laws in order to assist others.
In 2024, after her abuser was imprisoned for raping and assaulting her, Suzie Mahe gave up her right to lifetime anonymity.
She has been described as “inspirational” and “pivotal” in bringing about improvements to the island’s judicial system by friends and other women’s rights advocates.
“I am shaking,” Mahe remarked as she accepted the prize. “I didn’t expect anything… It just surprises me how many people care and how many people it’s touched,” she continued.
With drinks on the table and a purple BBC Make a Difference Awards winner trophy, Suzie and her pals are seated around a table at an outside location in the beautiful evening sun.
Friends joined Suzie as she accepted the medal. Earlier this year, the then-home affairs minister suggested five measures to shield women and girls from aggressive behavior, including cyberbullying and stalking.
“I wouldn’t wish what happened to me on anyone, but I know it will happen, so I think that Jersey will be a better island for them by sharing my story,” Mahe stated. “It’s so important and I’m so proud of everything that everybody has done.”
She also stated: “I just kept thinking about my daughter and what I would I want for her to grow up with, so I just wanted to make her proud.”
